Global Health Nursing Leadership Programme 2021 was successfully completed from November 1 to December 14, 2021. This training program was jointly organized by Health Human Resources Development Center (hereinafter referred to as HHRDC), as WHO Collaborating Center for Human Resources for Health, and College of Nursing of Peking Union Medical College as WHO Collaborating Centre for Nursing Policy-making and Leadership, and College of Nursing of University of the Philippines Manila as WHO Collaborating Center for Leadership in Nursing Development.
This online training is aimed at developing ‘fit for the future’ global nursing leaders in the WHO Western Pacific Region that will be able to step up and drive health outcomes through a systems-based approach built on the foundations of a strong primary health care, to face the challenges and changing health landscape due to the COVID-19 pandemic and to achieve Universal Health Coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals.
The program is designed across three thematic topics: global health, leadership and management, and policy and advocacy. Faculty members include senior officials from WHO Headquarters, Western Pacific Region, China Office, nursing professors from University of the Philippines, Peking Union Medical College, Australia and other countries, as well as front-line staff from relevant institutions. A total of 25 nursing managers from 11 countries in the WHO Western Pacific region participated in this program. Nearly 2000 audience from all over the world joined 3 synthesis seminars on line.
On November 30, HHRDC moderated the third synthesis seminar on "Policies and Advocacy". Dr. Gauden Galea, WHO Representative in China, and Pro. Michele Rumsey, Dean of the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health at the University of Technology Sydney were invited as the keynote speakers. It’s well acknowledged that nursing leaders should have keen analytical skills, and be good at analyzing and collaborating with relevant stakeholders through strategic communication. Besides, nursing leaders should have voice and influence in health policy formulation. The seminar fully recognized the important role nurses play in achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations and the top 10 health challenges facing humanity released by WHO. Nurses not only play a central role as health professionals in the clinic, but also have a broader place on the global health policy-making stage.
